Hi Everybody! Mike here, well those that know me, will by now be familiar with my weakness for large British Built Saloon cars from the 1960's and 70's. One boring Saturday in September of 2007 I visited the same web site where I purchased my Daimler, well as luck (fate) would have it they were advertising a Rover P5B Saloon, always liked these cars despite the disaster that was my 1968 Coupe.

I would like to point out that the company in question is a major dealership in the UK that runs adverts in all the classic car magazines!
I like what I saw, I trusted that they would do what they said, and that the car was as good as described, but, as they say a fool and his money are soon parted, I sent off a deposit and waited to hear back as to when the car would be ready!
Two weeks I was informed, and so I paid the rest and started to arrange a shipping date, time after time there was a delay of one sort or another, I remained convinced by what they told me, that they wanted to make sure the car was 'Just Right'
Finally on the 19th December the car arrived .. "Oh Dear!" (or words to that effect) I thought! "What have I purchased?"
It was not good, in fact it was very, very bad!! the bodywork and chrome was just horrid it leaked oil like a beached tanker, in fact seabirds were already been contaminated by the slicks left in its wake! the accelerator was very stiff, and when I took a closer look as to why? the pedal fell off in my hand!

Now this was not a cheap car! and I had every right to expect it to be damn near perfect. its funny how quickly sales staff can turn nasty, awkward and shift the blame onto the customer once you have a problem with a purchase! Well it's gone back! I got my money back (less sea freight etc, and I got my Daimler back, which had clocked up a couple of hundred miles, and arrived back in filthy condition! now all things been equal I can't really name the comany I got the car from, however ask Me in person and I will gladly tell you who I got it from and why you should never do business with them!

So my top tips for 2008, never, ever, ever buy a car without seeing it first! I know most of you know this, but sometimes we all let our emotions get the better of us when it comes to classics and our sensible hat gets chucked out the window, and our view becomes distinctly rose tinted! Update: 26-8-2008 This heap is still for sale in the UK Priced at over seven grand, take my advice gentle reader and don't go near it even with the longest of long barge poles!

Anyway I purchased a superb Vanden Plas 4LTR R from Ian Bowtle Classic Cars in Guernsey for much the same money as I paid for that wreck of a Rover! I went to see the car and fell in love with it right away! The Princess is almost perfect in every respect and I couldn't be happier!
